Dhaka, Bangladesh – The great Eid exodus is underway, but the journey home has turned tragic for two families today as a launch accident claimed two lives at the Sadarghat terminal amidst the chaotic rush.
As millions of people leave the capital to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their loved ones, the country’s transport hubs are bursting at the seams. However, the celebration has been marred by a fatal incident on the waterways.
Tragedy at Sadarghat
Witnesses at Sadarghat described scenes of panic this afternoon when a launch collision or overcrowding incident (details pending official confirmation) resulted in the deaths of two passengers. The victims were reportedly trying to board a crowded vessel when the accident occurred amid the overwhelming rush.
Fire service and police quickly arrived on the scene, recovering the bodies and bringing the situation under control. However, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols and crowd management during the peak travel period.
Terminals Overwhelmed
Across the city, the story is the same: too many people, too few vessels.
- Sadarghat River Port: The terminal is packed to capacity. Thousands of passengers are waiting for hours on end, clinging to luggage, as launches and ferries struggle to keep up with the demand. Many are seen climbing onto vessels already bursting at the seams, desperate to get a spot.
- Kamalapur Railway Station: The station premises resemble a sea of humanity. While trains are running on schedule, the waiting areas, platforms, and even the overhead bridges are overflowing with passengers. Many have been waiting since early morning for their turn to board.
- Bus Terminals: Major bus stands like Sayedabad, Gabtoli, and Mohakhali are also under immense pressure. Long queues stretch outside ticketing counters as families wait for buses heading to almost every district in the country.
Road Conditions: Smoother Sailing?
Meanwhile, on the highways, the situation is relatively better. Traffic is heavy on major routes, particularly at the Chandra exit on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, where vehicles are moving slowly. However, commuters report that road travel is currently less chaotic compared to the water routes.
Authorities have advised travelers heading north or southwest to consider road transport if possible, as waterways remain severely congested and risky due to overcrowding.
Safety Advisory
As the Eid rush intensifies, authorities urge all travelers to:
- Exercise extreme patience and avoid rushing.
- Refrain from attempting to board overcrowded launches, ferries, or buses.
- Follow the instructions of law enforcement stationed at terminals.
